Supima Design Competition in New York
For the past eight years Supima Cottons has hosted a design competition which is featured at New York Fashion week. The best students from the best design schools in the country design a line which is showcased at the Supima show. Supima kindly provides the students with luxurious cotton fabrics and work spaces. Supima Vice President of Marketing and Promotions Buxton S. Midyette says “We started this competition initially to showcase our textiles, but we needed to grow in more ways. We then reached out to some fashion schools…we donate a great deal of textiles to help students as well as teaching.” about the competition.
Since it’s start the competition has grown a great deal. This year Bibhu Mohapatra was the mentor and the show was hosted by former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo. The famous panel of judges included Catherine Baba, Ildo Damiano, Carmen Lilly, Aslaug Magnusdottier, Fern Mallis, Jessica Michault, Naomi Nevitt, Nicolas Ochenir, Sam Spector, Mary Alice Stephenson and David Yi.
Design student Kate McKenna from Savannah College of Art and Design held tears back when she came from back stage last Thursday, September 10th. She will be awarded the grand prize of $10,000. McKenna says that she was inspired by Hatian and African voodoo using basket weaving and indigo which was thought to have the power to keep the evil spirits away.
Her line featured evening looks made entirely of Supima cotton and was shown among other lines from students in the competition at the Skylight at Clarkson Square in Soho, New York. The line was composed of five beautifully painted, tailored and woven pieces. Two of these pieces were floor length gowns and flowed beautifully on the runway. The crowd’s favorite, however was a three piece floor length full skirt that was hand painted with African art, a crop top, and woven shrug. Her line was classy yet modern and interestingly ethnic.

We adore winner Kate McKenna’s evening line. We are very excited to see what next year’s students will bring!
