Exclusive Interview with GIG COUTURE in Paris
This week we met GIG Couture!
When I saw the collections by Designer Gina Guerra, it was love at first sight! She does incredible and beautiful work in knitting. Not only is she a very special and interesting woman but her collections and her handwork is as well.
The brand from Brazil develops many exclusive prints that can be seen in her collections. Gina is not a big fan of the fast fashion world which keeps her brand unique. Each piece is made of handwork with jacquards and special yarns mined over long researches, all this coupled with the high-tech machinery in their factory in Belo Horizonte. The entire process is closely monitored by Gina Guerra, attesting the quality control of their products.
For her latest FW15/16 collection she was inspired by her travel in Uzbekistan. The entire collection is made up of knitting and color palette they used includes camel, navy, brick, orange, black, rosé and blue water.
We had the chance to talk to her and ask her a few questions.
Why did you decide to become a fashion designer?
“I started making my own clothes as a young girl and I could not imagine any other job for myself. Even in school I was drawing my sketches instead of listening to the teacher, ” she smiles. “I was more into the books of Chanel”.
“I bought jeans in a shop and then I cut off the waistline and made “my jeans” out of them, because I never really liked the clothes in the shops.”
What is your favorite part about being a designer?
“I am a hyperactive person and I need the change. I could have never been a painter for example, because I do not have the patience for it. I love bringing personality in my designs; making them alive is my passion and my mission. Most of all I love making my own fabrics and prints.”
How do you select the materials you use?
It took almost 7 years to know all that I know about knitting. I choose my materials carefully and sometimes it takes 13 hours to produce a fabric with a 3 dimensional character.
Who is your favorite designer?
“Prada.”
What would you be today if you wouldn’t have become a designer?
“I could not imagine any other job for myself. I think I was born to be a designer.”
Here are some of our favorite pieces of the FW 15/16 collection!
We adore GIG COUTURE!
Merci
