Van Dyck’s Hidden Gem: Rare Landscape Found on Reverse of Andalusian Horse

A groundbreaking discovery has added new significance to Anthony van Dyck’s Andalusian Horse, set to headline Christie’s Old Masters Part I Sale on December 3. This early masterpiece, famed as his first large-scale solo depiction of a horse, revealed an astonishing secret: van Dyck’s only surviving oil landscape, painted on the reverse of the canvas. Uncovered during restoration after its 2000 sale, this rare find offers a glimpse into the young artist’s virtuoso talent and love for the natural world. The work is on display in Paris from November 14–21 before its pre-sale exhibition in London from November 29–December 3, with an estimate of £2–3 million.
