Serge Poliakoff: The Rhythms of Abstraction Revisited at Almine Rech
This winter, Paris becomes the epicenter of artistic retrospection with Les étés de Poliakoff at Almine Rech Matignon, a tribute to Serge Poliakoff, the Russian-born master of modern abstraction. Running from January 11 to March 1, 2025, this exhibition offers an intimate journey through the creative spirit of a painter who transformed the art world with his bold interplay of form and color.
Poliakoff’s story is one of resilience and reinvention. Born in Moscow in 1900, he fled Russia during the Revolution, landing in Paris in the 1920s, where the avant-garde movements of Cubism and Fauvism stirred his artistic imagination. Yet, Poliakoff never settled for imitation. Instead, he developed a language of pure abstraction, one that vibrates with rhythm, harmony, and a magnetic tension that is uniquely his.

The works on display are emblematic of this visual poetry. Through gouache and bold pigments, Poliakoff created compositions that are simultaneously meditative and dynamic. His ability to fuse the traditions of his Russian heritage with the cutting-edge explorations of the European art scene earned him a place among the giants of the École de Paris.
Poliakoff’s legacy is vast, with works residing in some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, from the Tate in London to MoMA in New York. Yet, this exhibition reminds us that his connection to Paris runs deep. It was here that his art flourished, and it is here that his influence continues to ripple across generations.
