Christie’s celebrates Surrealism: Clovis Trouille Collection – October 3

Sale on October 3
Exhibition from September 26 to October 3

PARIS – On October 3, Christie’s will present a tribute sale dedicated to Clovis Trouille (1889-1975), the iconoclastic painter described by André Breton as “the grand master of all is permitted”. The 88 canvases on offer all come directly from the studio of an artist who, according to him, painted only 120 over the course of his life. At a time when the Centre Pompidou is devoting a major exhibition to Surrealism, including Le rêve d’Alice (dans un fauteuil), from the artist’s studio, the sale on October 3 will provide an opportunity for a comprehensive retrospective of his work – which for a long time was known only to a group of amateurs – and which nevertheless had a decisive influence on the development of Surrealism and Pop Art.

Known for his whimsical spirit and rebellion against the artistic conventions of his time, Clovis Trouille was close to Salvador Dalí, Louis Aragon and André Breton. The latter described him as a “grand master of all is permitted” for his daring approach to Surrealist art.

A ‘super-surrealist’ who made his subjects more real than reality, defying all taboos and critics, Clovis Trouille undeniably played a crucial role in the evolution of both surrealism and pop art. Often provocative and always visionary, his work exploring dreams and idylls remains as captivating as ever.

The only painting missing from the October 3 sale at Christie’s Paris, Le rêve d’Alice (dans un fauteuil), is on view at the Centre Pompidou in the major exhibition devoted to Surrealism since September 3, to mark the movement’s centenary. However, the work’s counterpart, Le rêve d’Alice (or Alice au pays des Merveilles) , will be part of the collection on sale at Christie’s (estimate: 80,000 – 150,000€).

The 88 works for sale – mainly oils in artist’s frames – come directly from the artist’s studio. Estimates range from €300 to €180,000, for a total sale of €3.2 to €5.3 million.
