Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne’s Dining Room Set: A Legacy of Artistic Design

In 1965, a commission from Olivier de Beaume, the director of the Maison du Café, brought to life a unique dining room set that exemplified the collaborative genius of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne. Claude crafted six “Grain de Café” chairs to accompany a desk and an articulated table designed by François-Xavier, merging sculptural artistry with functional design. This project marked the beginning of a celebrated partnership that would bridge the world of sculpture and decorative arts.

By 1967, the Mobilier National recognized the Lalannes’ exceptional craftsmanship, commissioning them to create a variant of this model for the Oxford House of Culture. This distinguished piece was later showcased in Les Lalanne – de la sculpture aux Arts Décoratifs, a major retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, which celebrated their role in redefining decorative arts.

Made in the Lalannes’ studio in Ury, this table features a thick Carrara marble top resting on a steel construction of strip hoops—a unique approach that emphasizes the Lalannes’ commitment to exploring innovative forms and materials. The chairs mirror this approach, fashioned from thin, curved steel slats that form a graceful framework for the seat and back, blending delicate design with durability. The set stands as a testament to the Lalannes’ legacy, balancing the line between the ornamental and the utilitarian in a style that remains iconic today.
