24H IN THE BEST LUXURY HOTEL IN FÈS

24H IN THE BEST LUXURY HOTEL IN FÈS

In the heart of Morocco lies the ancient city of Fès, a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly. Nestled within this vibrant cultural tapestry is the Palais De Fès Suites & Spa, a sanctuary of luxury and tradition that offers its guests an unforgettable experience. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the city, we arrived at the grand entrance of the Palais De Fès Suites & Spa. The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by the warm smiles of the staff and the soothing sound of traditional Moroccan music. The lobby was an opulent display of Moroccan artistry, with intricate mosaics, plush carpets, and sparkling chandeliers. The air was fragrant with the scent of fresh roses and jasmine, instantly making us feel at home. Our 24 hours in Fès in the best luxury hotel just started…

This exquisite hotel offers an unparalleled blend of traditional Moroccan charm and modern comfort, making it a perfect retreat for discerning travelers.

Each suite at the Palais De Fès is a sanctuary of elegance.

Our suite LAYLA was a masterpiece of design, combining traditional Moroccan elements with modern amenities. The room featured hand-carved wooden furniture, silk drapes, and a private terrace with a breathtaking view of the Medina. The suite is a 55 m² tribute to the rich heritage of Fez and features a large bedroom, a living room, a walk-in dressing room, its own fireplace and, as already mentioned, a private terrace overlooking the Medina of Fès. A welcome basket of fresh fruits, delicious Moroccan pastries and flowers had been offered to us in the room upon arrival, the welcome really couldn’t have been better. We decided to have a light lunch at our room and enjoy the fresh fruits and pastries.

We had heard about the old pharmacies in Fès, or traditional Moroccan herbalists (herboristes), which are fascinating places where ancient practices and remedies are still used today. We visited some of them & they even showed us on site how to produce Argan oil. Incredibly interesting. Here are some notable aspects and places to visit if you’re interested in exploring these traditional pharmacies in Fès:

1. El Attarine Souk

Located in the heart of the Medina, the El Attarine Souk is famous for its spice and herbal shops. Here, you can find traditional herbalists selling a variety of natural remedies, spices, and herbal products used in Moroccan medicine.

2. Souk el Henna

This market is specifically known for its natural beauty products and medicinal herbs. You can find henna, ghassoul (clay), black soap, and essential oils, along with advice from knowledgeable vendors on their traditional uses.

3. Traditional Herbalists Shops

Throughout the Medina, you’ll come across small, old-fashioned herbalist shops. These shops are typically filled with jars of dried herbs, roots, and spices. The owners often have a deep knowledge of traditional remedies for common ailments.

4. Herboriste at Place Seffarine

Near the Seffarine Square, you can find herbalists who specialize in natural dyes, traditional cosmetics, and herbal medicines. This area is known for its metalworkers, but it also has a few well-regarded herbalist shops.

5. Dar el-Makhzen (Royal Palace) Area

While you can’t enter the Royal Palace, the surrounding areas, including the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), have traditional shops and markets where you can find old pharmacies that have been serving locals for generations.

Back at the hotel, we had a delicious mint tea on the terrace with the hanging gardens before freshening up for dinner.

Dining at the Palais de Fès Suites & Spa was an experience in itself. That evening, we were treated to a traditional Moroccan feast in the hotel’s elegant restaurant, DAR TAZI. The restaurant’s crowning glory are the terraces, known as the “Hanging Gardens”, which offer a breathtaking panoramic view of the medina, considered one of the most beautiful in Fez. The restaurant’s ambiance, with its elegant decor and live music, enhances the culinary experience, making each meal a memorable event.

The meal began with an assortment of salads (festival of salads), the best we have ever tried in Morocco. A must-try when in Fès. With each dish, the chef pays tribute to Morocco’s culinary heritage by creating delicious blends of flavors that take guests on a journey of the senses. After the ‘Festival de Salades’, we tried the delicious pasteles, one with seafood and one traditionally with pigeon. For us, it was a real explosion of senses and flavors, a truly fantastic experience. Followed by an excellent Tajine with chicken and one Tajine with beef – the meat was so soft and tender that is was melting in the mouth.

For dessert, we had a fruit platter and a special Moroccan sweet dessert with almonds and strawberries, so fresh and delicious that it was the crowning glory of this enchanted evening with a magical view over the Medina in the summer evening light…

The next day we explored the historic Medina of Fès, a UNESCO World Heritage site, we visited the famous Al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest continuously operating university in the world, and the stunning Bou Inania Madrasa, with its intricate tilework and ornate wood carvings. We also visited local artisans, watching as skilled craftsmen created beautiful pottery, textiles, and leather goods. I was particularly enchanted by the colorful ceramics, but also the detailed leatherwork.

On our last morning, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast on our private terrace, watching the city come to life. The call to prayer echoed through the air, a reminder of the rich traditions that made Fès so unique.
